BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

John S. Beach

Early Life

John Schuyler Beach was born on May 15, 1897, in New York City, New York, the son of Oren Milton Beach Jr. and Matilde Annette Weber. By 1900, he was living in Rye, New York, where he spent his formative years in a household that reflected stability, education, and relative economic means. Census records indicate a literate household with hired workers, situating the family within the evolving suburban landscape of Rye in the early twentieth century.

Beach was educated locally and completed four years of high school, an achievement that positioned him for entry into the growing white-collar workforce. By 1920, he was already working as a department head in a paper shop, reflecting early advancement in commercial employment during a period of economic transition following World War I.

World War I Service

John S. Beach entered naval service on November 17, 1917, when he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve Force at the New York Navy Yard. He was assigned the rating of Landsman Electrician (Radio), a specialized role reflecting the increasing importance of wireless communication in naval operations during World War I.

He trained at the Naval Training Camp at Pelham Bay Park, New York, before attending advanced instruction at the Harvard Radio School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, he developed technical expertise in radio operation and communication systems, skills essential to maintaining coordination within naval units and across broader military networks.

Beach subsequently served at the Navy Rifle Range in Wakefield, Massachusetts, and at the Naval Training Camp on Bumkin Island, continuing his technical and operational training. He later served within the Naval Auxiliary Reserve in New York and was appointed to the rating of Quartermaster, Third Class, on October 7, 1918, reflecting advancement and increased responsibility.

His service was entirely stateside, and there is no record of overseas deployment or combat engagement. He contributed to the Navy’s communications and training infrastructure during a critical phase of wartime expansion.

Life After Service

Following his military service, Beach returned to Rye, where he built a career in finance and commerce. Over the following decades, he worked in a variety of roles, including as a salesman in stocks and bonds and later as an investment statistician for a bank, reflecting the growth of the financial sector in the New York metropolitan region during the interwar and postwar years.

On September 15, 1928, he married Margaret Eldredge in Rye, New York, and the couple had one son, John Schuyler Beach Jr. The family resided in Rye for many years, including at addresses on Milton Road and Mohawk Street, where they maintained a stable middle-class household.

John Schuyler Beach died on April 29, 1980, in Port Chester, New York, at the age of eighty-two.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his son, John S. Beach Jr.; his extended family; and was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Eldredge Beach, who died in 1979.

He was memorialized at Christ’s Church in Rye, reflecting his long-standing connection to the community in which he had lived for most of his life.
