Toohy, J. Thomas
J. Thomas Toohy of Manchester, VT died January 1, 2017. He was born in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston on December 11, 1927 to Loretta Hughes Toohy and John Joseph Toohy.
After attending Resurrection Grammar School, he graduated from Rye High School in 1945. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Tom graduated with a Bachelors of Science from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949 and served as President of his class. After serving as a JAG officer in the US Navy, Tom began his career with IBM and remained there until his retirement.
Tom married Mary Olmsted; they settled in Rye and later moved to Greenwich, CT where they raised three beautiful daughters. The Toohy family was active in skiing and they were charter members of Stratton Mountain. While in Greenwich, Tom was active in The Wild Geese, a Connecticut-based Irish cultural organization.
Tom was predeceased by his brother Reverend William J. Toohy and two daughters, Mary Belinda Toohy and Sandra Eileen Toohy. Tom is survived by his loving wife Mary Olmsted Toohy; his daughter Megan Toohy McMahon (Thom) and four wonderful grandchildren, Mikaela, Fiona, Celsey and Conor McMahon. In addition, he is survived by his siblings Mary Toohy Hyson (Francis) of Greenwich, CT; R. Peter Toohy (Jane) of Houston, TX and Margaret Toohy Sweeney (Robert) of Rye, NY and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Greenwich, CT.
The burial will follow in the family lot at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 385 Bonnet St, Manchester Center, VT 05255. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
