BIOGRAPHY

Joseph McGrady

Early Life

Joseph McGrady was born on December 4, 1890, in Belfast, Ireland, during a period when economic hardship and limited opportunity led many Irish families to emigrate. He came to the United States around 1913, part of a broader wave of Irish immigration seeking work and stability in the years before the First World War.

By the time of his World War I draft registration in 1917, he was living on Grandview Avenue in Rye Beach, Rye, New York, and was employed as a bartender by Howard Bailey. He was single at the time and had declared his intention to become a United States citizen. He was described as of medium height and slender build, with dark blue eyes and dark brown hair.

World War I Service

McGrady entered military service on June 6, 1918, in New York and was assigned to the 152nd Depot Brigade, a unit responsible for receiving, organizing, and training soldiers for service during World War I.

He later served as a Private First Class in a Medical Company of the United States Army, performing duties related to the care and transport of wounded soldiers and supporting frontline medical operations. He was deployed overseas to France and departed from Saint-Nazaire, one of the principal ports of entry and exit for American forces in Europe, on May 9, 1919, as part of the postwar demobilization process.

His service included overseas duty during the final phase of the war and immediate post-Armistice period. He sustained no wounds or injuries in action.

He was honorably discharged following the conclusion of his service, returning to the United States after demobilization.

Life After Service

Following his military service, McGrady settled in the New York metropolitan area, living in Jersey City, New Jersey, by 1920 and later in the Bronx, New York, where he spent many years. He built a family life with his wife, Minnie McGrady, and worked steadily in the restaurant industry, eventually serving as a restaurant manager.

Over the course of his life, he and his wife raised several children, including his sons Frank, Joseph, and Alan, and his daughter Rose Mary, maintaining a family rooted in the region before later relocating.

Joseph McGrady died on October 21, 1971, in California at the age of 81. He was buried in San Diego, California.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his sons, Frank McGrady, Joseph McGrady, and Alan McGrady; his daughter, Rose Mary McGrady; and additional family members not fully identified in available records.
