BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Lawrence F. Hannan

Early Life

Lawrence Francis Hannan was born on April 16, 1900, in New York, the son of Joseph Arthur Hannan and Mary Agnes Hayes. He was raised at 39 Palisade Road in Rye, New York, in a large Irish-American family with deep roots in the community. Growing up in Rye at the turn of the twentieth century, he experienced a town undergoing steady suburban development while maintaining strong local identity and family networks.

Educated in local schools, he came of age in a household shaped by both family cohesion and the opportunities available in a growing Westchester County. By his late teens, he was already working as a bookkeeper, reflecting an early entry into professional and clerical work.

World War I Service

Hannan entered military service on October 1, 1918, when he was inducted in Rye, New York, and assigned to the Student Army Training Corps at New York University. This program was created late in the war to combine academic instruction with military training, preparing young men for potential service as officers or in technical roles within the Army.

His service took place entirely within the United States and coincided with the closing weeks of the war. Following the Armistice of November 11, 1918, which ended active fighting on the Western Front, the program was rapidly dissolved as the Army began demobilization. Hannan did not serve overseas and was not engaged in combat. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1918.

Life After Service

Following his discharge, Hannan completed his education at New York University and went on to build a career as a New York State auditor, a position that placed him within the administrative framework of state government. His work reflected a steady professional life grounded in public service and financial oversight.

In 1922, he married Helen Langlands in Rye, and together they raised a large family. Over time, they relocated to Wingdale, New York, where he spent his later years. Despite this move, his early life and family roots remained firmly tied to Rye.

Lawrence Francis Hannan died on August 28, 1963, at the age of sixty-three.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Helen Langlands Hannan; his sons, Laurence Hannan Jr. of Patterson, New York, Peter L. Hannan of St. Petersburg, Florida, and John E. and Arthur J. Hannan, both of Wingdale; his daughter, Mrs. Eugene Arvisais of Wingdale; his brother, Joseph A. Hannan of New York City; his sister, Mrs. John Flanagan of New Rochelle; and fifteen grandchildren.
