Louis Lavigna
Early Life
Louis Lavigna was born on November 25, 1896, in Rye, New York, the son of Federico Maria Lavigna and Carmela Immacolata Lavigna. He grew up in a working-class Italian-American family during a period when Rye and nearby Harrison were seeing increasing numbers of immigrant families establishing roots and building local businesses.
He was educated in local schools and developed skills in labor and mechanical trades that would later define his career.
World War I Service
Louis Lavigna was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 25, 1918, at Harrison, New York. He served in a Machine Gun Battalion, providing critical automatic fire support during military operations.
He served overseas from June 27, 1918, to January 16, 1919, with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. His role supported infantry operations through sustained firepower.
He held the rank of Private and was honorably discharged on February 8, 1919. His record shows no wounds in action.
Life After Service
After the war, Lavigna became a prominent local businessman in Harrison, operating LaVigna Brothers Garage on Halstead Avenue. He performed mechanical work himself and built a long-standing reputation in the community.
He was active in veterans’ organizations including the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as the Harrison Rod and Gun Club.
Louis Lavigna died on December 28, 1957, at United Hospital in Port Chester, New York.
He was survived by his wife, Anna Carlucci Lavigna; his sons, Angelo Lavigna and Frederick Lavigna; his brother, Joseph Lavigna; and two grandchildren.
