Joseph F. DeCarlo was born on January 9th, 1934. He was born in Brooklyn, and his parents were Mr. and Mrs. Angelo F. DeCarlo. He had two brothers, Anthony DeCarlo and Peter DeCarlo, one who was born in Brooklyn (Anthony), and one who was born in Venice (Peter). He also had two sisters, Virginia and Millie, both of whom were also born in Brooklyn. He was Catholic, and would attend Resurrection Church every weekend with his family. He lived in Galen House on Grace Church Street in Rye, Ny, and was taught how to sew at a young age from his mother, which later proved useful in the army when he sewed on chevrons to his uniform. He graduated from Port Chester High School in New York in 1951. He did this before he enlisted in the war because it was important to his father that he received an education. Joseph F. Decarlo served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Repair Squadron 17 of the first Marine Aircraft Wing.
