George E. Herbst

George E Herbst was born on June 21, 1909, in New York to Mary Fagan, age 27, and Harry Herbst, age 33. He had four brothers and five sisters. In Rye his family lived at 390 Forrest Ave..

He attended Rye and Port Chester schools and was a bartender at Green Tavern in Port Chester.

George married Miss Mary E. Halpin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Halpin of 352 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Mamaroneck Saturday June 15,1940 at the Holy Trinity Church by the Rev. Bartholomew Singleton. The couple would have one child.

Before entering the service 1942 he had served two enlistments in the National Guard, one as a member of the 102nd Medical Regiment.

George enlisted November 12,1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Army Medical Department and was honorably discharged August 27, 1943.

George E Herbst of 390 Forest Avenue, died Sunday June 21, 1957 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Batavia, N. Y. on his forty-eighth birthday.

He had been ill for eight years in several VA hospitals. He was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, Port Chester.

Besides his mother, he was survived by a son. James of Mamaroneck: three brothers, John and Arthur- of Port Chester- and Harry of Peekskill: five sisters. Mrs. Ethel Zucks and Mrs. Dorothy Roth of White Plains. Mrs. Anna Adams of Rye. Mrs. Helen Stitchfield of Atlantic City, N. J., and Mrs. Ruth Mason of Port Chester.
