Graeme K. Howard

Graeme K. Howard was born in Los Angeles, Calif. March 4, 1896. He was the son of the late Dr. Burt Estes Howard and Sarah Gates Howard. Both his parents were professors of political science at Stanford. He was graduate of Stanford University in 1917 and the Harvard School of Business Administration in 1920,

During World War I, Graeme was a captain of the 23rd Machine Gun Battalion. He married Margaret Reese Evans in 1918 and they had four children during their marriage and in Rye his family lived at 270 Locust Avenue.

During World War II, he was a colonel in the ordnance branch of the Army, and he headed the United State Element, Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force "SHAEF" mission to Norway in 1941. The same year he also was chief of the economic division of U.S. Croup Control in Germany. He received the Legion of Merit Medal and the King Haakon Liberation Medal.

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Foreign Policy Association. He was the author, in 1940 of a book, ''America and a New World Order.''

Col. Graeme K. Howard, U. S. A. , is home from overseas. His son, Flight Officer Reese E. Howard, U. S. A. Air Corps, is home on leave for a family reunion in their home on Locust Avenue.

After his return he became a vice president of both the General Motors Corp. and the Ford Motor Co, heading GM's Overseas Corp. and later the International Division of Ford.

Graeme retired in 1950 as president and a director of Ford International Co., foreign operations affiliate of the Ford Motor Co.

He was an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1956, a former treasurer of the Norfolk GOP Town Committee and a trustee of the Norfolk Library. At his death, he was chairman of a the Norfolk Planning Commission.

His memberships included: Norfolk County Club, Doolittle Lake Club, St. Cloud Club of Paris, Norfolk Curling, Club, Leash ( Club of New City, Council on Foreign Relations and Foreign Policy Assn.

Graeme K. Howard, former Rye resident, retired automotive executive and former Army colonel, died on Thursday, December 6, 1962 in Hartford Hospital at the age of sixty-six. His home was in Norfolk, Conn.

At the time of his death, survivors included his wife, the former Margaret Evans; daughter, Mrs .Richard Hollaman of Darien; two sons, Reese Evans Howard of Far Hills, N. J. and Graeme K. Howard Jr. of New Haven, and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral was held at the Church of Christ, Norfolk, with the Rev. Jay G. Seacord officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alden Hebard.

I had no idea, until today.
I learned many years ago that my grandad on my mothers side was part of the OSS, in part because he spoke french.

Thank you so much.

I feel a little guilty because I took the officer candidate for the navy, but passed to follow the Grateful Dead and now I'm a comic.
