BIOGRAPHY

Robert M. MacGregor

Robert M. MacGregor was born in Mt. Vernon, NY October 26, 1917 and grew up in Rye, NY, the only child of Charles Malcolm & Ina Hubbard MacGregor. In Rye his family lived at 325 Rye Beach Ave and were members of the Presbyterian Church. He was a 1938 graduate of Dartmouth College as an English major.

Robert enlisted September 23, 1942 in U.S. Army and served during World War II. He served as an Army Staff Sergeant during World War II, landing at Omaha Beach 1944 on D-Day plus one with the 3204 QMSC Company A. The term "3204 QMSC" likely refers to the U.S. Army's Quartermaster Corps and a specific unit or function within it, possibly related to a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or a detachment. The Quartermaster Corps is a sustainment branch responsible for general supplies, subsistence, petroleum, water, mortuary affairs, and aerial delivery.

After the war, he spent over 30 years at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance, he retired as Director of Special Promotions. Earning the Eagle Scout Award as a boy, he carried his love of nature and camping with his family on many treasured vacations. He was an avid sportsman, excelling in tennis and skiing in his youth and loved to golf in later years.

In retirement he enjoyed his cottage on Cape Cod with his wife and family and was active with many carpentry projects. He enjoyed watching all sports, stamp collecting, crossword puzzles, and playing Bridge with his partners at Village Gate in Farmington. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Hartford and served on Trustees, Deacons, and as Financial Secretary.

He was a devoted husband, caring parent and grandfather, competitor in sports and loyal friend to his companions. He had a sharp wit with a wry sense of humor and endured many physical challenges in his later years.

Robert Malcolm MacGregor, 89, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (April 24, 2007).

At the time of his death, he was survived by his daughter Laurie MacGregor and her husband David Hawkins of Groveton, NH; and by his son Robert MacGregor, Jr. and his wife, Sheila of West Hartford; and his two grandsons, David & Scott MacGregor.

A private memorial service for the family is planned at the First Baptist Memorial Garden in West Hartford. There are no calling hours.
