BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

Robert Cluett. 3rd.

Early Life

Robert Cluett III was born on April 24, 1888, in Troy, New York. He later resided in Rye, New York, where he made his home on Forest Avenue. He came of age in a community that included a number of prominent families with strong ties to business, finance, and higher education, many of whom maintained close connections to New York City.

This environment shaped Cluett’s educational and professional path. He attended Williams College and continued his studies at Exeter College, Oxford University, reflecting both academic distinction and the international outlook common among members of Rye’s more established social circles in the early twentieth century.

World War I Service

Cluett entered military service on January 15, 1918, through the United States Naval Reserve Force in New York as the nation expanded its armed forces for World War I.

He trained at the Naval Training Camp at Pelham Bay Park, one of the Navy’s principal wartime training centers. Established to rapidly prepare large numbers of sailors for service, the camp played a critical role in supporting naval operations during the war.

Cluett served as a Seaman Second Class and was later advanced to Quartermaster Third Class. In this capacity, he held responsibilities essential to shipboard operations, including navigation, steering, signaling, and maintaining the ship’s course. Quartermasters were key members of a vessel’s crew, ensuring safe and accurate navigation in both coastal and open waters.

His active service extended from January 30, 1918, to November 11, 1918, coinciding with the final and decisive year of the war. He remained on duty through the period of the Armistice and was honorably discharged on December 15, 1918.

Life After Service

Following the war, Cluett pursued a successful career in finance, becoming a member of the New York Stock Exchange and working with the firm Moore & Schley. His professional life reflected the strong connections between Rye’s residents and the financial institutions of New York City.

He was also active in academic and civic affairs, serving as chairman of the council of the School of General Studies at Columbia University, demonstrating a continued commitment to education and public service.

Cluett resided in Mount Kisco, New York, from 1932 to 1954, later living in New York City before retiring to Pawling, New York, where he spent his final years.

Robert Cluett III died on January 19, 1963, at his home in Pawling, New York, at the age of 74.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, Robert IV of Kent, Connecticut; and his daughter, Mrs. William A. Belden of Tucson, Arizona.
