Terry was born in Wahiawa, Hawaii. He was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps through ROTC at the Virginia Military Institute. While at VMI Terry met his future bride, Julia Rheingold, who grew up in Rye and graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia in 1986.

Terry served in the Marine Corps as an Infantry Officer on active duty from 1986-1990 and in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1990-1997. He served during Operation Desert Storm and was Honorably Discharged in 1997 holding the rank of Major. Terry and Julia moved to 450 Park Avenue in Rye in 2001 with their sons Jack and Daniel.

Terry’s father served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years so he grew up on military bases around the country until his dad retired at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in 1973. Terry graduated from Tabb High School in Tabb, Virginia in 1981 and from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia in 1986. Terry was a Cadet Captain, member of the Honor Court and captain of boxing team at VMI. Terry won a Marine Corps ROTC scholarship at VMI and was commissioned a Marine 2nd Lt. upon graduation. He attended The Basic School and Infantry Officer’s School in Quantico, Virginia in 1986-87.

His was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California from 1987-1989 where he served as an infantry platoon commander, weapons platoon commander and company commander. Terry and Julia were married in the chapel at Camp Christianitos on Camp Pendleton in 1987 and again in a Catholic service at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye in 1988.

Terry deployed to Egypt in 1987 and to Okinawa, Japan in 1987-88. In 1989, he joined the staff at the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton where he taught infantry tactics. Terry left active duty in 1990 to attend law school. While in law school in Maimi, Florida, Terry served as a platoon commander and training officer in an Anti-Tank Company in the Marine Corps Reserves. Terry returned to active duty during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

After graduating from law school in 1994, Terry, Julia and their infant son Jack moved to New York after Terry took a job with a law firm in New York City. Their son Daniel was born in 1996 and the family moved to 450 Park Avenue in Rye in 2001. Terry has been active in volunteer work in Rye for many years coaching youth sports, serving on the City Council from 2013-2017 and on the Rye Golf Club Commission, on which he currently serves as the Chair. Terry founded the Rye Boxing Club in 2005 and continues to teach life lessons to many young Rye boys and girls through boxing.

Terry is a partner in the law firm of McCartney Stucky LLC with offices in Rye and Kansas City, Missouri. Terry has been a member of Rye American Legion Post 128 for 20 years. He hosts a popular golf tournament at the Rye Golf Club on Memorial Day every year to raise money for Post 128. Terry was honored to receive the Americanism Award from Post 128 in May of 2021.
