Vincent C. Slater was born on April 1, 1935, in Portchester, New York. He grew up in Rye at 61 Purchase Street, right in the heart of town. His mother, Neve, did housework while his father George was the head of the house and worked as a butcher. Vincent had a very large family, having 7 other siblings. Vincent Slater was extremely patriotic and eager to fight for his country. He went to Marine boot camp before even graduating high school and during the Korean War he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
