BIOGRAPHY Extended Information

William J. McQuade

Early Life

William John McQuade was born on March 6, 1889, in Trillick, County Tyrone, Ireland, the son of Martin McQuade and Brigid McSorley. He grew up in a large Irish family that included numerous siblings—Mary Agnes, Patrick Joseph, Theresa, Margaret, Bernard Francis, Sarah Anne, Daniel, and Elizabeth Catherine—reflecting the structure of rural Irish households in the late nineteenth century.

He lived in Ireland through his youth and immigrated to the United States on September 18, 1910, part of a broader wave of Irish migration seeking economic opportunity. By the time of his military service, he was living in Westchester County, New York, including residence in New Rochelle, and was connected to the Rye community.

World War I Service

McQuade entered military service on December 13, 1917, at Fort Slocum, New York. He was assigned to multiple motor transport units within the United States Army, including Motor Truck Company 394, Provisional Motor Truck Company 5, and Motor Truck Company 398, all part of the Army’s expanding logistical network during World War I.

These motor transport units operated within the Army’s transportation system, responsible for the movement of troops, equipment, and supplies—an essential function supporting combat operations on the Western Front.

He served overseas from May 29, 1918, to May 20, 1919, as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, contributing to the logistical backbone of American operations in France during the final phase of the war.

During his service, he advanced to the rank of Corporal on December 1, 1918. He sustained no wounds or injuries in action.

He was honorably discharged following demobilization in 1919.

Life After Service

Following his return from military service, McQuade settled in New York City, where he built his family and career. He married Annie McNamara on November 28, 1922, in Manhattan, and together they had several children, including their son James, daughter Anna, and son Patrick.

He remained in New York City throughout his later life, residing in Manhattan and maintaining steady employment while raising his family. His life reflects that of many Irish-American veterans who transitioned from wartime service into stable urban family life during the interwar years.

William John McQuade died on February 17, 1952, in Manhattan, New York, at the age of 62.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Annie McNamara McQuade; his sons, James McQuade and Patrick McQuade; and his daughter, Anna McQuade.
