BIOGRAPHY

Edward Lambert Richards

Edward Lambert Richards was born in South Orange, N.J. on April 6, 1903, youngest child of Dickinson and Sally Lambert Richards. He was raised in New Jersey and had two sisters and one brother. Edward received his bachelor's from Yale in 1925 and his law degree at Yale University in 1928.

He married Elizabeth Woodbridge (Betty) Carter on April 20, 1929, in Manhattan, New York. They had three children during their marriage and in Rye his family lived at 315 Stuyvesant Ave. Edward was practicing law in NYC in the depression years leading up to the war.
Edward enlisted in 1942 and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Navy three years and left the west coast in November 1944. Since that time Edward had been in Pacific waters serving as a lieutenant commander of the amphibious forces on an attack transport.

He was wounded at Iwo Jima while acting as beachmaster during the invasion of the island by U. S. Marines. Edward was later hospitalized in Honolulu and then taken to a Navy receiving hospital in San Francisco. He was then transferred to the Naval Hospital, St. Albans, L. I. and finally recuperated at home in Rye. While home the war ended and he received his honorable discharge. He received the Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation Medal.

Edward was a lawyer in New York City for 40 years, and a 46-year resident of Rye.

Before retiring in 1979, he practiced law with the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McLoy in New York City. Active for many years in the Community Service Society in New York, he was chairman of its Drug Prevention Commission.

Edward was a parishioner of the Rye Presbyterian Church and was a former trustee, elder and clerk of the church session. He was a former trustee of the Rye Country Day School, a member of the Yale Club in New York City, member of the Cruising Club of America and was a past commodore at the American Yacht Club.

Edward Lambert Richards died on April 7, 1980, at his home on Stuyvesant Avenue in Rye, New York, at the age of 77. In addition to his wife, the former Elizabeth Woodbridge Carter, of the home address, he was survived by two sons, Dr. Ernest C. Richards of Rye and Dr. Edward L. Richards Jr. of Brookfield, Vt.; a daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Laura) Ells of Concord, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Olsen of Salisbury, Conn; and eight grandchildren.
