BIOGRAPHY

Foster William "Bill" Orr

Foster William "Bill" Orr was born on July 16, 1915, in Rye, New York, to Caroline McGuire Orr, age 28, and Jesse Foster Orr, age 22. As a young boy he worked at Coney Island and drove himself home at night even though he didn't yet have a driver's license; he worked at Radio City, the Biltmore Hotel, and was a chauffeur for Malcolm Forbes. He had one brother, Thomas, and in Rye his family lived at 21 Elmwood Ave.

Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served more than 2 years in the Aleutian Islands and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

Bill Orr is in the Aleutians but he hasn't seen anyone from Rye up there and doesn't blame them for not going there. Says the weather is bad with a few other things thrown in to boot.

After returning from the Aleutians he was with the field artillery stationed at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.

Bill married Barbara Dorathea Frank in Mineral Wells, Texas, on October 4, 1944 and they would have four children. She followed him around the world and back as the Army took their family to Europe, Japan, throughout the United States and to the artic testboard in the Alaska territory before it became a state.

His most highly regarded career was that of his work in the Army; he retired a Lt Colonel in 1968 after serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

Bill lived an adventurous life with exciting jobs that took him throughout the world. During retirement he drove a Good Humor ice cream truck, worked at Dairy Queen, and took college courses including an automotive class.

With vigor and energy, Bill lived his life to the fullest. He was quite active and in relatively good health and physical condition. He sometimes referred to other elderly as young whipper-snappers as he outlived all of his friends. He drove until a year before his death, kept a garden, fed the birds regularly, and traveled often to vacation and meet up with friends and family.

Bill's last travel came earlier this year when he and his youngest daughter, Patricia, moved to Ogden, UT, from Baton Rouge, LA, where they previously lived with his middle daughter, Janice, and her husband for eight years. Bill had known he was in his last days and wanted to spend them close to his son, Steve, and grandsons, Andrew and Tom, who are in Ogden, UT.

Foster William "Bill" Orr, 92, passed away Saturday morning, September 22, 2007.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and survived by his four children: daughter Bobbie Orr Clayton of Dallas, TX; daughter Janice Orr Hoover and her husband, Floyd, of Baton Rouge, LA; daughter Patricia Orr of Ogden, UT; and son Steve Orr and his wife, Cami, of Ogden, UT. Also surviving are six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bill, you will be missed, but your enthusiasm for life lives on.
