H. Theodore Hines

H. Theodore Hines was born in Stamford, CT on July 26 1907, the son of the William and Elizabeth Harrison Hines.. In Rye his family lived at 1305 Boston Post Road.

Theodore began his musical career with the piano, becoming organist at the Bethesda Baptist Church at the age of 15. Realizing his vocal talents, he took up singing, and had been soloist in many churches in the Rye area, including the Summerfield Methodist in Port Chester, Christ's Church and the Methodist Church in Rye.

He made his operatic debut in 1940 with the first Negro Opera Company at the Century Theater in New York, taking the part of Ramphis n "Aida." Thereafter he toured Army bases throughout the South as a member of the Fisk Quartet.

Theodore enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was with the original Great Lakes Octet, which was chosen by the government to sing before 800 ranking diplomats at the dedication of the mural to Marian Anderson in the Department of Interior in Washington. He then served in the Navy as quartermaster second class in the Pacific Theater.

After World War II he toured with Leonard DePauw's Regimental Chorus. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1952 and sang in “Showboat" ,''Finian's Rainbow” “The Saint Louis Woman” and other Broadway shows.

As a parishioner of Christ's Church in Rye he sang as a base baritone soloist in the choir.

Theodore Hines a Port Chester resident who sang in many Broadway shows died unexpectedly Monday February 23, 1981 at hit home. A Port Cheater resident for 15 years formerly of New York City he was 73.

He is survived by two daughters Mrs Hercules (Joyce) Fairey and Mrs Gabriel (Peggy) Maddox both of Mount Vernon a son William Hines of Washington DC a brother Leonard Hines of Rye and three grandchildren
