Hans (John) K. Dittman Hans (John) K. Dittman was born June 1, 1919, in Berlin, the son of Arthur and Hedwig Mattert Dittman. He moved with his family to White Plains, where he attended public schools. -After graduating from White Plains High School, John majored in piano at the Mannes Music School in New York which he attended on scholarship.
John enlisted in 1943 and served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After the war, he attended New York University, where he received a master's degree in education. He then settled in Rye, where he had lived off and on at his mother's residence when not attending schools in New York City. In Rye his family lived at 682 Forest Avenue and were members of the Presbyterian Church.
For 15 years, he taught in the New Rochelle public schools, and for one year at the Salesian High School, a Catholic school in New Rochelle. After his teaching career, he gave piano lessons to children. John played the piano in several bands over the years, often performing professionally in single engagements. He often attended jazz concerts.
John was on the executive committee of the of Conservative Party for Westchester County. He was a member of the Rye Presbyterian Church. For over 20 years, John assisted stray and orphaned animals throughout Westchester County. He served on the board of directors of Just Strays, a non-profit organization that rescues and abandoned cats and kittens.
Hans (John) K. Dittman, a professional piano teacher and a lover of animals, died Tuesday July 1, 1986 at United Hospital in Port Chester. He was 67.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Lisa.
