Herbert J. Cunningham

Herbert J. Cunningham was born February 25, 1918 in Bronx, NY to Walter and Eva Cunningham. He had 3 brothers and four sisters. He was educated in the Bronx and graduated from high school there. In Rye he lived on Purchase street before the war..

On August 7, 1940 Herbert married Mary Healy (Molly) at Rye Resurrection Church. They had two children during their marriage.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of Sergeant E5.

After the war, Herbert worked as a Police Officer for the City of Rye for approximately 30 years before retiring. He was a member of Knights of Columbus in Rye/Port Chester.

Herbert lived in Rye for 66 years, he was a retired City of Rye Policeman and Volunteer Fireman and a parishioner of Rye Resurrection Church.

He will be remembered for his love of singing, love of sports, love of country.

Herbert J. Cunningham of Rye, NY, retired police officer and volunteer fireman, Rye, died of cancer September 6, 2002 at United Hospital in Port Chester, NY. He was 84.

At the time of his dearth, he was survived by his sons Walter Cunningham of Union Vale, NY - Dutchess County and Thomas Cunningham of Larchmont, NY, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Family members who died earlier include Mary Cunningham his wife on August 28, 2001, his father Walter H. Cunningham (1980) and his mother Eva Cunningham (1981).

The Funeral was held Tuesday, September 10th, 2002 at Rye Resurrection Church. Interment followed at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY.
