John Lawrence Ely


John Lawrence Ely was born on September 17, 1909, in Ashburn, Virginia, to Katherine Brill Brewer, age 29, and John Lawrence Ely, age 27. He had one sister and they were raised in Jasper, AL.

John was graduated from Davidson College, in North Carolina, and the Columbia University graduate school.

He married Mary Wall and the couple had three children. In Rye his family lived at 632 Milton Road.

John enlisted May 23,1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in May 6,1946 and continued his service as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve.

After the war, John was a consultant to the U.S. Plywood Champion Paper Co. He was a member the Rye Fish and Game Club, and the Rye Presbyterian Church.

John Lawrence Ely, 63, of 632 Milton Road, Rye, died Monday July 9,1973 at the United Hospital, where he had been a patient. since June 23.

At the time of his death, survivors included his wife, the former Mary Wall the home address; three children, Mrs. Alan R. (Sally) Boyce of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Al Travis (Katherine), Abbott of Tuba City, Arizona; Charles. Ely of the home address: and one sister, Mrs. George Pollok of Dry Fork, Va..
