John H Sherbourne Jr.
John Henry Sherburne Jr. was born on January 17, 1909, in Greenwich, Connecticut to Ethel H Dueltgen and John Henry Sherburne. He had one brother and in Rye his family lived at 629 Milton Road.
John was a graduate of the Port Chester High School, attended Northeastern University, and was engaged in the grocery business established by his grandfather in 1887.
He married Miss Naomi Irwin on December 1, 1941 the Reverend Vinton E. Ziegler, pastor of
the Rye Methodist Church, officiated.
John enlisted April 15, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was enrolled at the
huge Air Corps Technical School at Keesler Field, Miss., for an intensive 19-week course, and trained as an airplane mechanic for active line duty
with the Army Air Forces.
 John received his honorable discharge October 16, 1945 and returned home to Rye. He continued with the family grocery business until his retirement in 1980 and moved to Florida. He was a member of the American Kile Flyers Association, he published kite designs for various kite magazines. Locally, he taught kite-making to children at Walter Fuller Field and was a member of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ.
John Henry Sherburne Jr. died on September 17, 1987, at Humana Hospital in St Petersburg, Florida, at the age of 78, and was buried there.
At the time of his death survivors included his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Phyllis West, Jacksonville. Ala., and Elizabeth Johnson, Clinton, NJ.; a son, John H. Jr.. St. Petersburg; a brother, Robert H., Rye; and five grandchildren. Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home. St. Petersburg.
