John J. Dalton

John J. Dalton was born in Boston, Massachusetts May 16, 1908 to Julia Fogarty and Matthew Dalton. John was was a graduate of F. E. Bellows High School, Rye Neck. In Rye he lived at Highland Hall and was working as a manager of a floor covering business on Purchase Street.

John enlisted March 12, 1942 and served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army after having successfully completed the Officer Candidate Course at the Infantry School, Fort Beaning, Ga. He held the rank of corporal before being commissioned.

He served with the Infantry in the European Theater of the war and landed with the invasion forces in Normandy on D-Day. John fought with the Third Army from the beachheads of Normandy to Czechoslovakia.

He was wounded in France in the early days of the continental war, and was wounded again in January, 1945.

John was overseas three years, and was awarded the Purple Heart, with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 5th Infantry Division during World War II.

He would continue his service and serve in the Army for over 20 years retiring June 30,1963
