BIOGRAPHY
 
John Robertson Henry

John Robertson Henry was born in 1914 in New York to Louise Mildred Tschetter, age 22, and John Robertson Henry, age 46. He had two sisters Eloise and Margaret and a brother Donald and in Rye his family lived at Rye Methodist Church where his father was pastor.

He was a 1931 graduate of Phillip Academy in Andover MA, he was graduated from Yale University in 1935 and from Law School three years later. At Yale, he was on the varsity swimming and diving teams. Before the war he was working for Shearman, Sterling & Wright in New York.

USS_Columbia_(CL-56)John served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served 38 months with the US Navy during World War II on the light cruiser USS Columbia.

Lieut. John R. Henry, Jr. . has been in the Solomons area for more than a year on the Cruiser Columbia. A recent hastily penned note from him said: Out of touch with mail for seven weeks. All we want from Santa Claus is sleep, for we have been at our stations for forty-six out of forty-eight hours. Have had plenty of luck and some fun but these babies sure can. take it.

After the war, John was placed on inactive duty as a lieutenant commander.

He married Miss Evelyn Earle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Ward Earle, of Brooklyn, on March 29, 1947. The ceremony was performed by the groom's father at Christ Church, Methodist, New York. The reception was held at the Hotel Carlyle.

John began his career with with the American Can Company. He started with American Can as an attorney, rose to general counsel, then secretary, vice president, and director before becoming vice president and corporate secretary. He retired in 1971.

He was a member of DKE and the Elihu Society at Yale, the Yale Club ofNew York City, the Apawamis Club, the Rye Historical Society and the Society of Philatelists.

A member of the Rye Presbyterian Church, he was also a former member of the Manursing Island Club and was for some years a district leader tor the Rye Republican Club and secretary of Keep America Beautiful in New York City.

John R. Henry died Wednesday February 1, 1974 at his home in Rye.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Earle two sons, Peter Robert of Ithaca, N.Y., and Douglas of Milwaukee; a daughter Susan Earle Henry of Denver; a brother, Donald W. of Middlebury, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Eloise (Walter) Crandell of Hanover, N.H., and Mrs. Margaret (Griffith) Jones of Washington Depot, Conn.; and a granddaughter in Ithaca..
