BIOGRAPHY
Joseph F. Straus
Joseph F. Straus son of Joseph A. and Ella (Fleming) Straus was born July 22, 1909, in New York City. His family later moved to Westchester. He was a graduate of Manhattan Preparatory School and College. In Rye he was active with the Rye YMCA and the Milton Point Engine and Hose Company of the Rye Fire Department.
Joseph married the former Marie Scocca at St. Augustine's Church in Larchmont on Feb. 14, 1941. He enlisted may 15,1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After his honorable discharge, Joseph was a former treasurer of the Rotary Club of Larchmont, and a former vice commander of American Legion Post 90 of Larchmont and American Legion Post 128 in Rye.
A Larchmont resident for 40 years, Joseph was also a swimming teacher and a qualified lifeguard. He served as traffic chairman for the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a past president.
He owned and operated the Plaza Radio Co., at West and Palmer Avenues, for 25 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1966. He was a member of the Traffic Commission for 15 years until he left Larchmont in 1971.
Joseph F. Straus, 65, of 2333 Palmer Ave., New Rochelle, a former vice-chairman of the Larchmont Traffic Commission and long active in community organizations, died unexpectedly June 20,1975 at his home.
At the time of his death, survivors, in addition to his wife, include two children, Patricia M. Straus and Joseph F. Straus Jr..
