Thomas J. Hayes

Thomas "Nippy" Hayes was born on March 29, 1903 in Port Chester to Harry and Dora Balls Hayes. He had ten siblings and was educated in Port Chester public schools. In Rye his family lived at 42 Meadow Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Thomas enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In World War II, be was a special agent with the Counter Intelligence Corps of the War Department's Military Intelligence Division. He belonged to the National Counter-Intelligence Corps Association, as well as the New York City chapter of that association.

Experiences with the Army Counterintelligence Corps were recounted by Patrolman Thomas J. Hayes of the Rye Police Department yesterday at the luncheon meeting of the Lions Club at the Y.M.C.A. Starting on German Bund organizations in this country, Hayes worked in England, Iceland and the Philippines investigating un-American activities. While in the Far East he worked in close cooperation with General MacArthur in gathering evidence against Japanese generals for war crimes.

Nippy served in the Rye City Police Department for 33 years from the 1930s to the mid-1960s. retiring at the age of 62 as a detective sergeant. Mr. Hayes was a member of the Rye Police Benevolent Association, the police union. He also belonged to the New York State Federation of Police, the Police Emerald Society of Westchester County and the Police Conference of New York .

He was a life member of the .Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1550 and belonged to the American Legion Post 220 of Tupper Lake, N.Y. He was an honorary member of the Rye Fire Department and belonged to the Port Chester. Old-Timers Athletic Association. Nippy was a parishioner of Resurrection Roman Catholic Church of Rye.

Thomas J. "Nippy" Hayes of Davis Avenue in Rye, a retired Rye police detective, died Saturday 10/6/1984 at Greenwich Hospital.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, the former Marie F. Kubricky of Rye; a son. Thomas J. Jr. of Rye; a daughter. Patricia Hayes of Greenwich; a brother, James Leo Hayes of Shenrock Lake. N.Y. and two sisters, Dorothy Anderson of Rye and Katherine Grant of Skowhegan. Maine.
