William Andrews Wilson

William Andrews Wilson was born on October 26, 1917, in New York City, New York to Helen Rolston and William A Wilson. He lived in Rye, New York, for more than 5 years from 1935 to 1940. In Rye his family lived at 215 Purchase Street and were members of Christ's Church.

William graduated St. George's School in 1937, and then was employed by the G. F. Gillespie Co. He married Sallie Battelle Soutter on August 22, 1938, in Bedford Hills, New York.

William enlisted October 19, 1942 and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Lt. Wilson was a pilot with a B-24 Liberator Heavy Bombardment Group of the 15th Air Force and was awarded the Air Medal.

The Fifteenth Air Force (15th AF) was a major strategic bombardment organization of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was formed to complement the Eighth Air Force in England. Its location in the Mediterranean allowed it to reach targets in southern France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Balkans—many of which were inaccessible from England or hampered by English weather.

In August 1944 he was reported missing after his plane was shot down and a potential Prisoner of War.

Lieut. William A. Wilson, of the 15th Army Air Force, a prison- er of war according to notification received this week by his wife, Mrs. Sallie S. Wilson, Stuyvesant Avenue, Rye. Lieut. Wilson. reported missing since June 26, was piloting his B-24 Liberator over Austria when the Germans shot the craft down and captured the survivors.. His plane, named for one of his small daughter, was "Miss Wendy." The Rye man was recently awarded the Air Medal for "meritorious achievement in aerial fight while participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy." He had entered the Air Forces Oct. 19, 1942..

William was liberated at the end of the European war in May of 1945 and returned home to Rye.

He joined the Westchester Field Hockey Club and tried out for the Olympic team in Philadelphia. William was a member of the American Olympic Men's Field Hockey team which participated in the London 1948 Olympics. He scored the only point for the Americans in Olympic competition. Team USA tied for 11th, with India winning the Gold Medal.

In 1950, William and his wife and three children were living in Rye at 1 Overlook Place and he was working as a insurance underwriter.

William Andrews Wilson died in February 1984 in Vieques, Vieques, Puerto Rico.
