Description

Rocco M. Romano was born in New York January 9,1916 to Michael and Raffaela Schiro Romano. He had seven sisters and one brother Tony and in Rye his family lived at 60 Purchase St.

Rocco was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1936 and a football star.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. Rocco entered service in 1939 as a private and rose to be captain before leaving the Army several years after the war. He served with the 34th Medical Battalion in Hawaii and in the European Theater of Operations as a battalion surgical assistant. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked it on Dec 7 1941.

Lieut. Romano Promoted

Announcement has been made by the War Department of the promotion of 2nd Lieut. Rocco Romano of Rye to 1st lieutenant. Lieut. Romano joined the Army three years ago as a private and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japs attacked. He is a graduate of Rye High School and was well known in athletics. Mrs. Romano and their two months old son, Mike are with him at the Army Field at Oscada, Mich. He is in the Medical Department.

1st Lieut. Keith McKesson, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald McKesson, Manursing Island, and 1st Lieut. Rocco M. Romano, 28, of 60 Purchase Street, are taking a six-week course in the School for Medical Administrative Corps Officers at the Army Service Forces Center, Camp Barkeley, Texas. They are training to become battalion surgeons assistants.

Rocco was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge

After his discharge he made his home in Yorktown Heights. He was active in Yorktown Height civic organizations- and was president of the Rod and Gun Club and a participant in die Boy Scout program

Rocco was graduated from Bryant College Providence RI with a BS degree in accounting. He was employed as an accountant with Zenith Corp New York City.

He entered the Kingsbridge Veterans Hospital the Bronx far the operation which he did not survive.

Rocco Michael Romano, forty-two, formerly of Rye, died Tuesday September 23,1958 at Kingsbridge Veterans’ Hospital, the Bronx, following an operation.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Mrs. Angel Romano; three sons, Michael, William and Steven; a brother, Anthony Romano of Port Chester and his seven sisters.
