74 Rye residents have been identified as having served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

The United States Marine Corps played a critical role in the Allied victory across the Pacific during World War II. Marines became renowned for their courage, determination, and fighting spirit as they carried out amphibious assaults against heavily defended Japanese positions throughout the Pacific Theater. Their service established the Marine Corps as one of the most respected fighting forces in military history.

The 74 Rye residents identified on this page answered their nation’s call during a time of global conflict and uncertainty. Though smaller in number than some other branches of service, Rye Marines participated in many of the most significant and hard-fought campaigns of the war. Their service reflected the commitment and sacrifice made by the Rye community during World War II.

Rye Marines served throughout the Pacific and were present in virtually every major campaign fought by the Marine Corps. They participated in operations at Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Tarawa, Peleliu, Saipan, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and numerous other islands as Allied forces advanced toward Japan. These battles often required amphibious landings against fortified enemy positions and resulted in some of the fiercest combat of the war.

Particularly noteworthy was the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most famous engagements in Marine Corps history. Fifteen Rye Marines are known to have served during the campaign. Four lost their lives and seven others were wounded during the fighting. Their sacrifice forms an important chapter in both Rye’s history and the history of the Marine Corps.

Rye Marines served in a wide variety of roles including infantry, artillery, communications, engineering, aviation support, logistics, intelligence, and medical support assignments. Whether assaulting enemy-held beaches, defending captured positions, supporting combat operations, or maintaining vital supply lines, every Marine contributed to the success of Allied operations throughout the Pacific.

The veterans documented within this section represent Rye’s contribution to some of the most historic battles of World War II. Their courage, perseverance, and sacrifice helped secure victory in the Pacific and preserve the freedoms enjoyed by future generations.
