Women of WWII

54 Rye women have been identified as having contributed to the Allied war effort during World War II through military service, nursing, humanitarian organizations, volunteer work, and other essential wartime roles.

The women featured on this page have been identified as the 54 women honored on the Rye City Hall World War II Honor Roll. Through extensive research, RyeVets.org has created a biography for each woman so their contributions to the war effort may be preserved and remembered.

These women served in the U.S. Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine Corps, American Red Cross, Royal Air Force, and Royal Canadian Air Force. Their service demonstrates the many ways Rye women answered their nation’s call during World War II and contributed to Allied victory.

Their duties were as varied as the war itself. Among them were combat nurses, aircraft mechanics, meteorologists, pilots, communications specialists, military administrators, and American Red Cross workers often known as “Donut Dollies.” Whether serving at military bases in the United States, hospitals overseas, airfields in Europe, or support facilities throughout the Pacific, each played an important role in the Allied war effort.

On average, these women served approximately two and one-half years during the war. Some met their future husbands while in service, some went on to build military careers, and four experienced the personal tragedy of losing a brother who died while serving during World War II. Their stories reflect both the sacrifices and opportunities created by wartime service.

The biographies within this section allow visitors to learn who these women were, where they served, where they lived in Rye, where they attended school, and what became of them after the war. Whenever possible, each biography includes photographs, newspaper articles, military records, historical links, and other information documenting their lives and service.

These biographies were created to ensure that these women are no longer simply names engraved on a memorial. Their service, accomplishments, sacrifices, and personal stories deserve to be remembered and shared with future generations.
