Undetermined Service

12 Rye World War II veterans are known to have served during the war, but their specific branch of service has not yet been determined.

Branch of Service Unknown World War II Veterans from Rye New York

The veterans listed within this section are confirmed World War II veterans whose service to the nation is not in question. Their names appear on the Rye City Hall World War II Memorial and they are included among the 1,477 World War II veterans currently documented by RyeVets.org. However, despite extensive research, their specific branch of military service has not yet been determined.

Researching World War II veterans often requires piecing together information from military records, newspaper articles, census records, city directories, yearbooks, obituaries, cemetery records, family collections, and personal recollections. While RyeVets.org has successfully identified the branch of service for the overwhelming majority of Rye’s World War II veterans, a small number of records remain incomplete.

These veterans are known to have served during World War II and are honored on the Rye City Hall World War II Memorial. It is possible that some served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army Air Corps, Merchant Marine, or another wartime organization. Until reliable documentation is located, RyeVets.org has chosen to preserve their records within this category rather than risk assigning incorrect military service information.

The existence of this section reflects an important part of the RyeVets mission. Historical research is an ongoing process, and many discoveries have been made through the assistance of family members, classmates, neighbors, historians, veterans, and community members who have shared photographs, military documents, newspaper clippings, letters, and personal memories.

Although their branch of service remains unknown, these veterans are no less deserving of recognition. They answered their nation’s call during World War II and are honored alongside the other men and women whose names appear on Rye’s wartime memorials.

The records contained within this category serve as a reminder that preserving local history is often a continuing effort. Every photograph, military document, newspaper article, yearbook entry, or family story has the potential to help identify a veteran’s military service and further complete the historical record.

If you have information that may help identify the branch of service or wartime history of any veteran listed within this section, please contact us at info@ryevets.org or use the Write A Review link located at the bottom of the veteran’s page. Your assistance may help complete the historical record and ensure these veterans receive the fullest recognition possible for their service.
