U.S. Army World War II Veterans from Rye New York

The United States Army was the largest branch of the American Armed Forces during World War II and included soldiers serving in infantry, armor, artillery, engineering, medical, communications, intelligence, logistics, and countless other specialties. Army personnel were deployed throughout the world and played a critical role in achieving Allied victory.

The 686 Rye residents represented on this page came from every part of the community. They left local schools, churches, businesses, neighborhoods, and families to answer their nation’s call following America’s entry into World War II. Many would spend years serving far from home, while others would make the ultimate sacrifice.

Rye Army veterans served wherever they were needed. Some fought across North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. Others served throughout the Pacific, including New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and numerous island campaigns. Together they participated in many of the defining operations that led to Allied victory.

Their service extended far beyond the front lines. Rye residents served as riflemen, tank crewmen, artillerymen, engineers, medics, military police, intelligence specialists, mechanics, truck drivers, radio operators, and administrative personnel. Every assignment contributed to the success of military operations and the eventual defeat of Axis forces.

The veterans documented within this section represent only a portion of the story of Rye’s contribution to World War II. Each biography preserves the experiences of an individual veteran while collectively illustrating the extraordinary commitment and sacrifice made by the citizens of Rye during one of the most significant periods in world history.

Many of these biographies remain works in progress. We welcome assistance from family members, historians, classmates, neighbors, and fellow veterans who may possess photographs, military records, newspaper articles, obituaries, personal memories, or information regarding military units and assignments.

If you have information that can help us expand or improve a veteran’s biography, please contact us at info@ryevets.org or use the Write A Review link located at the bottom of each veteran’s page.
