Rye High School

463 Rye High School alumni have been identified as having served during World War II. Fifteen made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

The veterans featured on this page once walked the same hallways, attended the same classes, participated in the same activities, and competed on the same athletic fields as Rye High School students today. Of the 1,477 World War II veterans currently documented by RyeVets.org, 463 attended Rye High School, making it one of the most significant connections between Rye’s wartime generation and the present-day community.

The building pictured above is the same Rye High School that continues to serve students today. Long before they became soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, nurses, and wartime volunteers, these young men and women were students, athletes, musicians, actors, and classmates. They participated in many of the same activities that continue to be a part of student life today, including football, basketball, baseball, track, band, orchestra, and numerous school organizations.

Many of the biographies within this section include photographs and information obtained from The Stagecoach, Rye High School’s yearbook, which continues to be published today. These yearbooks provide a unique glimpse into the lives of students before the war, preserving their accomplishments, friendships, activities, and ambitions.

When the United States entered World War II, Rye High School alumni answered the call in remarkable numbers. They served in every branch of military service, including the Army, Army Air Corps, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and various wartime organizations. Their service carried them to battlefields, airfields, ships, hospitals, and military installations around the world.

Approximately two dozen Rye High School students left school during their senior year to enter military service before graduation. Like thousands of young Americans of their generation, the demands of war interrupted their education and dramatically altered the course of their lives.

The biographies on this page tell far more than military stories. Visitors can learn where these veterans lived in Rye, the sports and activities in which they participated, the schools they attended, the military units in which they served, and what became of them after the war. Many went on to become business leaders, educators, community volunteers, military officers, parents, and grandparents who helped shape the postwar Rye community.

The 15 Rye High School alumni who died during World War II are remembered alongside their classmates who returned home. Their sacrifice remains an enduring part of both Rye High School’s history and the history of the community they left behind.

These biographies were created to ensure that these former students are remembered not simply as names in a yearbook or names on a memorial, but as individuals whose lives, service, and contributions helped shape both Rye and the nation.
