The veterans featured on this page served in the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps during World War I. Although the Army accounted for the largest share of Rye’s wartime service, dozens of local residents answered the call at sea and in naval aviation, while a small number of Marines served alongside Army forces in France.
When the United States entered the war in April 1917, the Navy faced the enormous challenge of transporting millions of soldiers and vast quantities of supplies across the Atlantic Ocean. German U-boats threatened Allied shipping, making control of the sea essential to victory. American sailors quickly became part of a global effort to protect troop convoys, escort merchant vessels, patrol coastal waters, and maintain the maritime lifeline connecting the United States and Europe.
Rye Navy veterans served aboard a wide variety of vessels including battleships, cruisers, destroyers, troop transports, supply ships, and the small but vital SC-class submarine chasers. These fast patrol vessels hunted German submarines and protected coastal shipping lanes, performing duties far beyond their modest size.
Others served aboard the great battleships of the era, vessels that represented American naval power during a period of rapid expansion. While many ships saw limited direct combat, their presence helped secure Allied control of the seas and ensured the safe movement of troops, equipment, and supplies necessary for victory.
World War I also witnessed the birth of modern naval aviation. Among Rye’s veterans were some of the earliest members of the United States Naval Aviation community. These pioneers operated at a time when military aviation itself was still in its infancy and helped establish traditions that would later play a critical role during World War II.
The Marine Corps remained a relatively small organization during World War I, but its reputation was permanently shaped by service in France. The Marines identified within this category served as part of the 4th Marine Brigade and other organizations that fought alongside Army units during some of the war’s most significant campaigns.
Marine veterans from Rye participated in operations associated with famous battles such as Belleau Wood, where the Marine Corps earned a lasting reputation for determination and courage. Their service helped establish the Marine Corps’ place in American military history and remains one of the defining chapters of the First World War.
Whether serving aboard warships in the Atlantic, hunting submarines, flying early aircraft, protecting convoys, or fighting on the battlefields of France, Rye’s Navy and Marine Corps veterans played an important role in America’s contribution to the Allied war effort.
Like their Army counterparts, these men returned home to become part of the generation that shaped Rye during the decades between the two world wars. They became business owners, public servants, community leaders, skilled tradesmen, and parents whose children would later serve during World War II.
They served wherever the nation required—at sea, in the air, and on the battlefields of France.
The biographies contained within this section preserve the stories of these sailors and Marines and document their contributions both during and after the war. Visitors can learn where they lived, where they attended school, the ships and units in which they served, and the lives they built after returning home.
Many of these biographies remain works in progress. We welcome assistance from family members, historians, neighbors, and community members who may possess photographs, military records, newspaper articles, letters, or personal memories relating to these veterans.
