World War I U.S. Army Veterans from Rye New York

The veterans featured on this page served in the United States Army during World War I. Of the more than 300 Rye residents identified as serving during the war, over 200 wore the uniform of the Army, making it by far the largest branch of service represented within the community.

When the United States entered the war in April 1917, the Army expanded rapidly to meet the demands of a conflict already raging across Europe. Thousands of young Americans were called into service through enlistment and the Selective Service Act of 1917. Among them were hundreds of men from Rye who left their homes, jobs, schools, and families to serve their country.

Many Rye soldiers became part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under the command of General John J. Pershing. Following training in the United States and overseas, they joined American forces participating in some of the most important campaigns of the war.

Rye Army veterans served during major operations including the Aisne-Marne Offensive, the St. Mihiel Offensive, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the largest military operation in American history up to that time. Others served in occupation forces following the Armistice or supported military operations from bases, depots, hospitals, and transportation centers throughout France.

The Army veterans documented within this section served in a wide variety of organizations and specialties. Among them were infantrymen, artillerymen, engineers, military policemen, mechanics, drivers, clerks, radio operators, medical personnel, and support specialists. Rye veterans served in organizations including the 27th Infantry Division, the Quartermaster Corps, the Ordnance Department, transportation units, engineer units, medical organizations, and the early Army Air Service.

While many soldiers experienced combat near the front lines, countless others performed vital support functions necessary to sustain a modern army. They transported supplies, repaired equipment, maintained communications, cared for the wounded, constructed roads and railways, and ensured that combat units received the resources needed to continue fighting.

The experiences of Rye’s Army veterans reflected the broader American experience during World War I. Many had never traveled far from home before entering military service. Within a matter of months, they found themselves crossing the Atlantic Ocean, training in unfamiliar environments, and serving alongside soldiers from every corner of the United States.

After returning home, these veterans became part of the generation that shaped Rye during the decades between the two world wars. They became business owners, teachers, police officers, firefighters, public servants, community leaders, and parents whose children would later serve during World War II.

They answered their country’s call during America’s first great overseas war.

The biographies contained within this section preserve the stories of these soldiers and document their contributions both during and after the war. Visitors can learn where they lived, where they attended school, the units in which they served, the campaigns in which they participated, and the lives they built after returning home.

Many of these biographies remain works in progress. We welcome assistance from family members, historians, neighbors, and community members who may possess photographs, military records, newspaper articles, letters, or personal memories relating to these veterans.
