Somerville, Harry W.

Harry W. Somerville was born on November 16th, 1914 to parents Harry M. Somerville and Minerva Langhans. Growing up he lived with his family at 19 Horton Street, Rye, NY .

His family consisted of his mother and father, as well as his brother Warren, and for some time his aunt and uncle lived with them as well.

Harry attended Rye High School, graduating in the class of 1934. During his time in Rye High School, he was a member of the Messenger Corps, the Thespians, Dramatics, and Le Cercle Francais. Harry was also given the titles of Class Thespian, and Class Smoothie.

After graduation Harry attended Stetson University in Florida for one year before entering the work force. He would work until he enlisted into the army on January 9th, 1942. While in the army Harry married Jean A. Kirk, on May 1st, 1943 and they would have two children.

Harry served as a Wheeled Vehicle Maintenance Office in the 3614 QM Truck Company in the European Theatre. The 3614 was a part of the famous “Red Ball Express”, resupplying troops during the Allies march to Germany.

After D-Day some 28 Allied divisions needed constant resupply. During offensive operations, each division consumed about 750 tons of supplies per day (about 100 pounds per man) totaling about 21,000 tons in all.

The only way to deliver them was by truck – thereby giving birth to the Red Ball Express.

At its peak, it operated 5,958 vehicles and carried about 12,500 tons of supplies per day.

Harry was discharged from the army as Captain in the Quartermaster Corps.

After his discharge, Harry worked aboard the S. S. Santa Paula as a Junior Purser.

On December 9th, 1957, Harry passed away aboard the S. S. Santa Paula. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Jean A. Kirk, a son, Kirk Somerville, and a daughter, Jean Somerville.
