George Hogben Stith

George Hogben Stith was born Nov. 16, 1922, to James and Mattie Harrison Stith at United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester. He was raised and educated in Rye. He graduated from Rye High School in 1941, where he was involved in track and football. In Rye his family lived at 76 Grapal Street

George enlisted August 24, 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the US Army Signal Corps.

During World War II, the U.S. Army Signal Corps was responsible for managing the Army’s entire system of communication and for documenting the war through photography and film. Under the motto Pro Patria Vigilans (“Watchful for the Country”), the Corps expanded from a small pre-war unit to a force of hundreds of thousands, pioneering technologies like radar and tactical FM radio that proved decisive for Allied victory.

George received his honorable discharge November 1, 1946.

He returned home and went back to school graduating from Howard University in Washington, D.C., with a degree in design engineering. He was a member of Omega Phi Psi fraternity.

On April 30, 1950, he married Betty V. Smith in Greenwich, Conn. George worked as a draftsman for several companies, retiring from his last position at The Elmer Perkins Corp. in Norwalk, Conn., in the late 1980’s.

George Hogben Stith, a retired design engineer, died November 14, 1990 at his home in Rye. He was 67. The cause of death was not disclosed.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife; his daughters, Rhandi Stith and Kim Reynolds; a brother, James E.; and a sister, Marjorie A. Stith. A brother, John, and a sister, Alice Rollins, died earlier.
