Jacqueline (Rust) McCoy

Jacqueline Rust was born April 1, 1925 in White Plains, NY., the daughter of Franklin M. and Laura (McGraw) Rust. In Rye her family lived in Hix Park. Jacqueline was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942 and The Washington School for Secretaries.

She enlisted in May 1945 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Jacqueline attended the Marine Women’s Reserve Schools at Camp Lejeune, N. C.

The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Schools at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, opened on July 1, 1943, to consolidate recruit training and officer candidate schools, training nearly 19,000 women for WWII service. Under Colonel John M. Arthur, this facility became the primary training site for Women Marines, with specialized training for roles like radio operators and mechanics.
Young women were keen on serving in the military during WWII, and the Marine Corps desired only the best. The standards set for women who wished to volunteer for the Reserve were demanding.

Jacqueline served at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, CA as a stenographer and clerk typist. During World War II, women in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve (MCWR) served in essential roles at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, CA, performing duties like aviation mechanics, radio operation, and clerical work to “free a Marine to fight”. These “Lady Marines” supported the aviation training and operational missions at the base, which was a hub for training pilots and ground crew.

On November 9, 1945 she was united in marriage to Corp. James Earl McCoy. USMC. The wedding took place in the chapel of the Marine Corps Air Station, Kl Toro, Santa Ana, Calif. They would have nine children during their marriage

Announcement has been made of the marriage of Pfc. Jacqueline Rust, USMCWU. to Corp. James Earl McCoy. USMC. The wedding took place in the chapel of the Marine Corps Air Station, Kl Toro, Santa Ana, Calif. , on Nov. 9, The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Martin Rust of Hix Park. She is a graduate of Rye High School and The Washington School for Secretaries and enlisted in the Marines last May. Corp. McCoy has been serving in the South Pacific for over two years with the 1st Marine Division. His home is in Shelton, Washington. The couple spent a brief honeymoon at Big Bear in the mountains near Los Angeles and then returned to their duties. They will shortly he at home in Shelton each expects to be discharged this month.

Jacqueline enjoyed cooking, sewing, painting and taking care of babies. She was also a master gardener and her specialty were flowers.

Jacqueline (Rust) McCoy died Thursday, June 21, 2018 in Iowa City, IA. She was 93.

At the time of her death survivors included eight children: James McCoy of Denham Spring, LA; Timothy (Kathleen) McCoy of Redfield, AR; Mark McCoy of Olympia, WA; Daniel (Jennifer) McCoy of Tenino, WA; Jonathan (Vivian) McCoy of Eugene, OR; Laura McCoy of Iowa City; Philip (Nancy) McCoy of Lakeville, MN; Andrew McCoy of Tenino, WA; a daughter in law, Dawn McCoy of Riverside, IA, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
