Description

Wallace H Bracken was born on September 10, 1900, in Jackson, MI to Grace S Bracken, age 22, and William Wallace Bracken, age 24. In Rye his family lived on Van Wagenen Avenue.

Wallace was a 1922 graduate of the University of Michigan. He married Wilhelmina Warner in September 1922 in Jackson, Michigan. They had three children during their marriage.

 

Wallace served in the Navy in World War I and was a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II.

In 1945 he was given a commendation by the Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy for work during the war in the drawing and microfilm division of the Bureau of Aeronautics,

The commendation read in part, “It was largely due to exceptional ability, initiative and tact expressed by you that this section was able to handle efficiently the project of applying to over 400 aircraft and engine maintenance activities large quantities of invaluable technical data on microfilm. “It is estimated that more than 350 of these devices would not have had access to such material and its lack could have had an adverse effect on the war effort. In fact the program has proved to be of such value that it has become an integral part of aviation maintenance procedure and will be continued during peacetime operations. You have performed the duty assigned to you in a manner that was far beyond that which could normally be expected of an officer of your rank.”

After the war, Wallace was a merchandising manager for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Later, he was was marketing manager for C. H. Masland and Sons, carpet manufacturers, in Carlisle, Pa., before his retirement in 1956.

Wallace H. Bracken died in February 1979 in Oakland, New Jersey, at the age of 78. His wife, the former Wilhelmina Warner, died in 1967.

At the time of his death, he was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sally Hommel of Ho-Ho-Kus; two sons, Warner and Peter of Oakland; a brother, Worth of Dallas, Tex. ; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted at Christ Episcopal Church in Ridgewood, NJ.
