Gregory A. Greeley was born May 25, 1915, in New York City to Hugh and Ellen Gowan Greeley. He had three brothers and four sisters. Gregory grew up and attended school in Rye and he was known by his nickname Butch.. In Rye his family lived at 108 Wappanocca Ave. Butch enlisted 21 Dec 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
During World War II, he was with a U.S. Army engineering battalion in campaigns in Tunisia and Italy. He won a commendation for his work in building the first floating bridge across the Po River in Italy.
On Jan. 16, 1946, he and Ann Foy Ward were married at St Gabriels Church in New Rochelle. They moved from Rye to Port Chester in 1952.
Butch was a former president and trustee of Local 137 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, He retired in 1980 alter serving in the union for 45 years.
Butch was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester. He was a former volunteer with the Rye Fire Department. He was an avid reader and. enjoyed walking, his family said.
Gregory A. Greeley of Port Chester, a retired carpenter and union official died Tuesday January 17, 1995 at United Hospital Medical Center, He was 79. His wife died Oct 24, 1994.
At the time of his death he was survived by G. Peter Geeley of Port Chester NY, a brother Peter Greeley of Lakehurst, NJ., and five sisters, Mary Krulin and Eileen Sullivan, both of Florida, Joanne Geogheghan of Yardley, Pa., Vincentia Greeley of Manhattan and Katherine Crebbs of California. Four brothers, Hugh Jr., John, Horace and George, died earlier.
