Gerald W. Groglio was born in New York February 14, 1923 to Jerry and Mary Groglio. His siblings were brothers, Nicholas, William, Joseph, George and John; and sister, Angela. In Rye his family lived at 34 Elizabeth St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Gerald was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941. He enlisted on January 26, 1943, when he was 19 years old and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the European Theater.

Gerard was cited by Lieut. General George S. Patton commanding the U.S. Third Army

“typical American fortitude each-man displaying conspicuous bravery with rapidly developed and extremely effective fire for their part in destroying 14 enemy aircraft Which attempted to strafe a Ninth Air Force ‘fighter strip “somewhere in France”

The field was protected in part by the gun crews of the Ninth Air Defense Command of which the fighting men are members “It is such action as this” the citation concludes “which has made the command the greatest air defense organization of its kind in the world”

After an honorable discharge, he returned to school majoring in electronics. An avid golfer his entire life, he spent over 20 years happily retired, golfing and making wonderful friends in sunny New Mexico.

“He’s just a common Veteran and his ranks are growing thin.
If we cannot do him Honor, while he’s here to hear the Praise.
Then at least let’s give him homage, at the ending of his days
Our country is in mourning for a Veteran died today.”

Gerald W. Groglio, 82, passed away on June 17, 2005.

At the time of his death Gerald was survived by his wife of 57 years, Terri; son, Neil and wife Marcia; daughter, Kathy and husband John; three grandchildren, Kelly, Christopher, and John; brothers, Nicholas, George, and John; and sister, Angela Anderson. He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Michael; his parents, Jerry and Mary Groglio; and two brothers, William and Joseph.

Final resting place is in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
