Charles Eldredge
Early Life
Charles Eldredge was born on December 15, 1890, in New Rochelle, New York, the son of Charles Eldredge and Ida Elizabeth Sanford. He was raised in Rye, New York, where his family maintained deep roots and long-standing ties to the community.
Growing up along Boston Post Road, Eldredge was part of a household that reflected the evolving suburban character of Rye in the early twentieth century, where established families often combined domestic life with boarders and extended family under one roof. He later entered professional life as a clerk and began a career in banking, placing him within the expanding financial sector tied to New York City.
World War I Service
Eldredge registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Rye, New York.
He entered naval service on July 25, 1917, and was later commissioned as an Ensign on July 10, 1918, serving in the United States Navy.
He was assigned to the Fifth Naval District in Norfolk, Virginia, one of the Navy’s principal administrative and operational commands responsible for coordinating coastal defense, training, and logistics along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard.
Records indicate service associated with the USS Pittsburgh (CA-4), an armored cruiser that conducted patrol and escort duties in the Atlantic during World War I. Ships of this type were essential to protecting Allied shipping from German U-boat threats and ensuring the safe transport of troops and supplies to Europe.
Eldredge served during the critical period of naval operations that supported the American Expeditionary Forces, contributing to the broader effort to secure Atlantic sea lanes. His record indicates no wounds or injuries in service.
He was released from active duty on March 15, 1919.
Life After Service
Following the war, Eldredge established a successful career in banking, working with the Bank of New York and later serving as vice president and senior trust officer of the People’s First National Bank of Miami Shores. His professional life reflected both continuity with his early clerical work and advancement within the financial sector.
Charles Eldredge died on July 23, 1967, at the age of 76.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his sisters, Mrs. Ida Smith and Mrs. Margaret Beach, along with extended family.
Memorial services were held at Christ’s Church in Rye, reflecting his enduring connection to the community in which he was raised.
Record Commentary: Strong naval officer profile with clear linkage to Fifth Naval District and USS Pittsburgh. Atlantic naval operations are well contextualized, though campaign-level naval actions are inherently less discrete than ground offensives. Clean and well-balanced narrative.
