Charles M. Barber

Charles Michael Barber was born on August 19, 1895, in Rye, New York, the son of Emmanuele (John) Barbaro and Maria Michele (Rachael) Calabrese. He grew up in Rye with several siblings in a large Italian-American family.

At the time of his registration in 1917, Barber was living in Yonkers, New York, and working as a conductor for the Yonkers Railroad Company. He was single at the time and listed his parents as dependents.

WORLD WAR I SERVICE

He was inducted into the United States Army on July 18, 1918, in Yonkers, New York. He was assigned to Company D, 30th Machine Gun Battalion, part of the 53rd Depot Brigade at Camp Hancock, Georgia. Depot brigades were responsible for training and organizing troops before deployment. Barber served as a Private First Class and did not serve overseas during World War I. He was honorably discharged on January 25, 1919.

POSTWAR LIFE

Following the war, Barber returned to civilian life and later married Martha Scilla on April 19, 1941, at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. He worked in a variety of roles, including delivering milk for Sheffield Farms and later operating the Red Top Dog Kennel in Rye for 50 years.

He was also active in animal welfare, serving as manager of the Westchester Humane Society in Harrison from 1945 to 1960. He remained active in community organizations, including the Rye Fish and Game Club and the Masons.

Charles M. Barber died on January 4, 1991, in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 95. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Martha Scilla Barber; his two sons, Daniel H. Barber of Greenwich and Charles M. Barber Jr. of Port Chester; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
