Description
George J. Sullivan
George John Sullivan was born on April 24, 1891, in South Norwalk, Connecticut. After the death of his parents, Dennis and Mary Sullivan, during his youth, he came to Rye, New York, where he was raised by his aunts, Jane and Elizabeth Sheridan, at 32 Purchase Street.
He spent much of his early life in New York City, where he received his education in the public school system, before returning to Rye, where he became part of the local community. By the time of the First World War, he was working as a porter at the Milton Hotel in Rye, supporting his wife and young child.
World War I Service
Sullivan entered military service on May 3, 1918, when he was inducted at Port Chester, New York, into the United States Army. He was assigned to Company 104 of the Engineers, a unit responsible for construction, maintenance, and logistical support operations essential to the functioning of the Army.
Engineer units during World War I performed a wide range of duties, including building roads, maintaining infrastructure, and supporting troop movements. Their work was critical to sustaining military operations, even when not directly engaged in front-line combat.
Sullivan served in the rank of Private. His period of service was brief, and there is no record of overseas deployment or combat engagement.
He was honorably discharged on January 11, 1919.
Life After Service
Following his military service, Sullivan returned to Rye, where he resumed his life within the community. He continued to be associated with the local area and maintained connections with his extended family.
He was known to have a wide circle of acquaintances in Rye, though he was not formally affiliated with many local organizations. Earlier in life, he had been a member of the Holy Name Society while living in New York City.
George J. Sullivan died on December 18, 1924, at United Hospital in Port Chester, New York, at the age of 33, following a six-week illness attributed to heart trouble.
He was survived by his two aunts, Jane and Elizabeth Sheridan, who had raised him.
