Anne Mary Devers

Anne Mary Devers was born on October 22, 1919, in New York to Mary Ann Hunter, age 36, and John Joseph Devers, age 41. She had one sister Ellen and two brothers John and Hugh. In Rye her family lived at 46 Meadow Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Anne was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1937. In high school she was very active in clubs and sports and was a member of the National Honor Society

Anne enlisted March 3,1943 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II until October 6, 1945. She served as a Sergeant with Company "F" Second Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps Henderson Hall, Arlington, Virginia. Her service number was 755110 and she served in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve.

Young women were keen on serving in the military during WWII, and the Marine Corps desired only the best. The standards set for women who wished to volunteer for the Reserve were demanding.

They served in occupations classified as professional, semi-professional, clerical, skilled trades, services, and sales. The peak strength of the Reserve was about 19,000. In Washington, DC Anne's specialty was as a microfilm technician with the Marine Corp.

Anne married Jack Center Witte on August 28, 1948 in Greenwich, CT. They would soon move to Roselle, New Jersey and start a family. In 1972 the family was living in Boca Raton, FL and Anne had started work at the Boca Raton Library, where she was in charge of technical services.

In 1988, she was chosen employee of the month by IDS American Express and the City of Boca Raton Parks and Recreation Department. Anne's motivation, enthusiasm, friendly attitude and courteous manner, had earned respect from the staff she supervises, her peers and the public she serves.

When asked how she felt about receiving Employee Of The Month Award, Anne stated "It's mighty nice to be recognized by co-workers. I was raised under the old code, to use God given talents to the best of my ability, to do the best job I can. I can't operate any other way, it's just the way I am and it's nice to be appreciated."

Her husband Jack passed away on October 19, 1996, in Deerfield Beach, Florida, at the age of 76. They had been married 55 years.

Anne Devers Witte died on January 3, 2011, in Denver, Colorado, when she was 91 years old.
