John Franklin Van Deren


John Franklin Van Deren was born on May 26, 1908, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Susan Elizabeth White and William Musselman Van Deren. He was a graduate of the University of California and Harvard Law School. He was associated with Cadwallader, Wickersham and Taft, New York attorneys. In Rye he lived with his sister at 21 Greenleaf Street and was a member of the Apawamis Club.

He married Harriet Burke Lyons on November 29, 1941 in Greenwich, CT. They had two children during their marriage. In Rye his family lived at 21 Greenleaf Street.

John served as an officer during World War II. He served as a major in the U.S. Army Air Forces based in Washington, DC.

Van Deren Now Major

Captain John Franklin Van Deren, of Sussex Gardens, has been promoted to major, the War Department announced this week. He is stationed in Washington, D. C. Major Van Deren is a graduate of the University of California and Harvard Law School. He was associated with Cadwallader, Wickersham and Taft, New York attorneys, and was a member of the Apawamis Club.

After the war, John returned home and raised his family in Greenwich, CT. He would make partner in the New York law firm of Cadwallader, Wickersham & Taft.

John Franklin Van Deren, 65, died of an apparent heart attack April 10, 1974, at his home 7 Gingko Lane Greenwich, CT.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Harriet Burke Lyons Van Deren, a son John F Via Deren Jr. and a daughter Nancy Van Deren
