Mary Theresa Beary was born on June 11, 1906, in Rye, New York, to to Daniel H. and Sophia Burns Beary. In Rye her family lived at 75 Purchase St and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Mary grew up in Rye and was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1925. She graduated from Beaver College for Women and earned a Masters Degree from New York University
On November 10, 1942, age of 35, she enlisted in the Army to serve in World War II.

Mary served in the Army from 1942 to 1955, attaining the rank of Major. In 1950, she married Lt. Col. Wayne Allphin in Germany.
After her discharge from service, she worked as a school teacher for White Plains Public Schools for twelve years before retiring. Mary was a life-long resident of Rye and belonged to American Legion Post #128.
Mary Beary Allphin, of Rye, died December 26, 2001 at United Hospital in Port Chester. She was ninety-five. She was predeceased by her husband Lt. Col. Wayne Allphin.
