Description
When Bruce Andrew was born on August 21, 1914, in Greenwich, Connecticut, his father, John, was 35 and his mother, Jemima, was 39.
He had three brothers William, John and Alexander and in Rye his family lived at 199 Purchase St.. Bruce was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1933.
Bruce enlisted April 15, 1942 and served in the in U.S. Army during World War II.
Bruce served in an armored division in General Patton’s Tank Corps. He trained in both the U.S. and England. His division landed in Normandy on June 9, 1944, D-Day +3.
They fought through Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. Bruce was wounded in action by an artillery shell in September of 1944 and received the Purple Heart. He was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in action and received the Croix de Guerre personally from French General Charles De Gaulle.
Bruce Andrew died on January 23, 1985, in Dade City, Florida, at the age of 70.
