Bernard Walter Mockler was born in Mt. Vernon, New York July 18, 1923 son of Martin J. Mockler Jr., a WWI Veteran and Helen Terrance Mockler. The family lived in Mt Vernon, NY where he was raised and he attended A. B. Davis High School.
His mother died in 1936 when he was fifteen years old and his father died in 1942 when Robert was just twenty. He and his three brothers: Robert, John and Martin III moved to Rye to live with their grandfather Martin Mockler Sr. In Rye his family lived at 341 Forest Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
Bernard enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

S. Army Air Force, – is now home on furlough. Inducted in March, 1943, he received his basic training at Miami Training Center, Miami, Fla. He was then sent to Fort Crook, Neb., for, training, and then to Administrative and technical clerical school at Salt Lake City, Utah. He is now stationed at the Army air base at Wendover, Utah.
A graduate of Davis High, he was employed by Cartier’s, New York, before his induction.

Bernard was honorably discharged January 27, 1946. He stayed locally for a few years before moving to California.
In September 1950, he was recalled to active duty while living in Los Angeles, serving with the medical detachment of the Pasadena 223 Infantry, National Guard. Bernard was active in his church, St. Emydius, as vice president of the Holy Name Society. He also served as an officer in the local American Legion, Bay City Post 13.
