Charles P Black was born June 8 1927 in Davenport Iowa to William T and Gertrude Zirkel Black. The family moved to Rye in 1928. and lived at 396 Midland Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

As a young boy Charles delivered newspapers on his bicycle. He was a Boy Scout and often camped in the woods off Manursing Way. His mother taught him to play the piano without learning to read music and he could play a long after hearing anything just once, his family remembered. He was a student at Resurrection Grammar School through eighth grade and graduated from Rye High School, Class of 1945.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Charles served in the Marine Corps and was stationed in China, see Muster Rolls. Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division. His brother Thomas Maynard Black was killed in action at Iwo Jima.

After the surrender of Japan, 7th Marines took part in Operation Beleaguer in China from 30 September 1945 through 5 January 1947. The mission was to repatriate the Japanese military that remained in China after V-J day.

After the war, Charles married Rita D. Abraham of Bedfordshire England at Resurrection Church in 1950. He formed Gedney and Black Tree Service with his lifelong friend and brother-in-law, Leslie Gedney. When their partnership dissolved he formed Charles P Black Tree surgeon 4- Surgery

He was a retired member of the Rye Volunteer Fire Department He also was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the China Marines.

Charles P Black of Rye, a tree surgeon and retired volunteer firefighter died Sunday July 9, 1995 of cancer. He was 68.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, his two sons Gary and Charles D both of Rye, four daughters Kathryn Hulbert of Harrison, Marge Kiss of Hudson, NY, Dorothy Hunt of Norwalk Conn and Laura Dorazio of Mahopac, four brothers Travis of Maine, Vincentof California, James of Arkansas and John of Florida, three sisters Marion Fredricks of Melbourne Fla, Carol Maragnano of Hartford Conn and Barbara McConnville of Manchester’ Conn and 11 grandchildren.
