Edward George Daly was born on February 21, 1892, in Rye, New York, and was raised within the established community of the town. He resided on Purchase Street, one of Rye’s principal thoroughfares, and grew up in an environment shaped by both long-standing local families and a growing population connected to New York City.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Rye’s economy reflected its dual character as both a residential suburb and a service community. Daly’s early employment as a chauffeur placed him within the network of skilled workers who supported local households and estates, while maintaining strong roots in the town where he was born and raised.

World War I Service

Daly registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in the Town of Rye, listing his residence as 29 Purchase Street and his occupation as a chauffeur. At the time, the United States was preparing to expand its forces for service in World War I under the American Expeditionary Forces.

He was inducted into military service on June 24, 1918, at Port Chester, New York, and was assigned to the 152nd Depot Brigade. Depot brigades were responsible for receiving, organizing, equipping, and training new soldiers, forming a critical part of the Army’s mobilization system during the later stages of the war.

During his service, Daly advanced steadily in rank, rising from Private to Corporal and ultimately to Sergeant. This progression reflects both his reliability and leadership within a training environment that demanded discipline and organization as the Army prepared troops for potential deployment.

His service was conducted within the United States, and his record indicates that he did not serve overseas. He sustained no wounds in action and completed his service with an honorable discharge following the conclusion of hostilities.

Life After Service

Following the war, Daly entered the brokerage business in New York City, transitioning from his earlier work into the financial sector during a period of economic expansion in the 1920s.

He married Grace Margaret Magan in 1919, and together they raised a family, including their children Geraldine, Edwina, and Charles Edward. The family later resided in Larchmont, New York, at Albee Court.

Edward George Daly died on January 14, 1935, at his home in Larchmont following a month-long illness from pneumonia at the age of 42.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Grace; his daughters, Geraldine and Edwina; and his son, Charles Edward.

A Mass of Requiem was held at St. Augustine’s Church, and he was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rye, New York.
