Description

Robert L. DeBevoise was born July 26, 1907, son of George and Jessie Lord Debevoise. He had one older brother George.

He attended the Allen Stevenson School in New York City and graduated from St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., in 1925 and from Harvard University in 1929.

Robert married Betsy Hart Doughty February 24, 1939 in Williamstown, Ma. In Rye he and his wife lived at 7 Julian Street and were members of Christ’s Church.

Robert served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enlisted June 24, 1942 and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After the war he was was president of the Debevoise Paint Co. in Brooklyn, N.Y., and resided in New York City before retiring to Williamstown, MA in the early 1970’s.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Richard A. Ruether Post 152 of the American Legion and served on the town Finance Committee, the Community Chest and Recording for the Blind. He was also a trustee of the Hoosac School.

Robert L. Debevoise, 76, of 628 Hancock Road died Thursday November 24, 1983 at his home after a long illness.

The funeral was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church and burial was in Westlawn Cemetery.
